This places us in an ideal position to assess which findings a prospective racehorse owner should be concerned with and which findings are of little or no consequence.

Lameness is the biggest cause of poor performance in the racing industry and indeed joint problems cause a large wastage in the industry.

The Racetrack Practice has some of the latest radiography machines available and many years experience assessing radiographs to be able to offer clients expert professional opinions. We pride ourselves in offering our clients quick results and accurate diagnostics.

We have priority access to Nuclear Scintigraphic evaluation at discounted rates (only 2 such machines within 200 km of Melbourne) for those cases where a diagnosis cannot be confirmed by conventional techniques. Importantly, we are able, due to our large case load; interpret these findings given that these horses are typically in hard training and racing. Certain findings that may be seen as abnormal in a pleasure pony may indeed be normal in an elite equine athlete.

Tendon and ligament injury can result in many career ending injuries to the racehorse.

The Racetrack Practice is developing new methods of therapy for the treatment of once career ending injuries. We are currently working with stem cell therapy and a combination of growth factors. The clinic is actively involved working in combination with researchers in alternative therapies.

The clinic is also the only clinic in Australasia that has experience of working with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to potentiate the stem cell therapy. Please feel free to contact us to discuss a case.

Upper respiratory Airway problems are a common reason for problems in the racing Thoroughbred.

The Racetrack Practice realises this and for this reason every veterinary surgeon is able to perform these examinations daily. If further tests are required the veterinary surgeon is able to perform further tests, such as examination while working, while also having priority access to high speed treadmill examinations.

Examination of yearlings over the past few years has increased significantly with the advent of radiographs available for most yearling's sold. The Racetrack Practice has a veterinary surgeon available at all major sales, including Gold Coast, New Zealand, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

We specialise in offering affordable veterinary advice combined with expert opinion, examining both horse and radiographs. Unlike many, we are not in a compromised position to assess yearlings for sale as we do not routinely provide yearling sale radiography or stud services for Vendors selling their yearlings.

Our risk assessments are based on extensive clinical evidence and data collated from the large numbers of horses we see in hard training each day.
